What is Botox?
Botox is an injectable medication that has many cosmetic and medical applications. Its primary use is minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Botox can rejuvenate your appearance without extensive pain, surgery, or downtime. Results are temporary, so you can choose to continue treatments once the medication wears off or let it gradually fade.
How does Botox work?
As a neuromodulator, Botox interferes with the nerve signals that cause muscle movement. The treatment temporarily paralyzes the muscle it’s injected into, preventing the skin on top from folding. Once injected, Botox can relax existing wrinkles and prevent fine lines from turning into deeper folds.
Can Botox address all types of wrinkles?
Botox treats dynamic wrinkles resulting from repeated expressions, such as smiling or frowning. These lines tend to appear in the upper one-third of your face. Common dynamic wrinkles that Botox may treat include:
- Crow’s feet
- Glabellar lines (between the eyebrows)
- Forehead lines
- Bunny lines (on the nose)
- Marionette lines (around the mouth)
Neuromodulators can’t address static wrinkles, which develop from long-term volume loss. These lines include nasolabial folds and hollow cheeks. Dr. Rahimi may recommend dermal fillers for static wrinkles.
What are the other uses for Botox?
Along with wrinkles, Botox can address several dental concerns, such as:
Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ)
TMJ is a chronic disorder that causes jaw pain. You have a temporomandibular joint on each side of your jaw. This sliding-hinge joint allows you to open and close your mouth. If the masseter muscles that support the joint strain, moving your jaw can be painful. Injecting Botox into the masseter muscle may relieve pain and slim the appearance of your jaw.
Gummy smile
A gummy smile happens when your gums appear to overpower your teeth. Botox can help relax the upper lip to minimize the appearance of your gums when you smile. This injectable treatment is an ideal nonsurgical alternative to gum contouring surgery.
How long does Botox last?
Botox treatments typically last for about three to four months. Once your results fade, you can return to Folsom Medical Plaza to maintain your refreshed appearance.
Botox can soften wrinkles and correct a wide range of dental concerns. Call Folsom Medical Plaza or book an appointment online to learn more today.
